Home accents come in may types and styles but what they all have in common is that they have to work for your home and your décor style. I can’t tell you how many hours my wife and I would run around from store to store looking for just the right item to add that special touch to some room or another at home. That is we used to do this before the concept of ecommerce came along. I’m sure many readers can relate to these excursions with equal frustration. It’s been many years since my wife and I had any small children around the house but I remember when we did, one of the minor frustrations of my wife was finding clothing accessories for them. You have to remember that there wasn’t anything like the internet around for the average person. In fact, the only computers around were owned by the government and some very large business and educational institutions. Ma Bell was still in knickers then. That statement may even go above most readers’ heads but I digress.

When you live in a small community like we did and without the modern shopping venues available today, finding neat little things to accent a young child’s dress were hard to find. Today however there is no end to the locations one can find these little niceties.

Pumpkin Boutique is one that caught my attention not so much because it just carried child oriented accessories but because what is found in the shop is so darn cute and so reasonably priced. To be quite honest, I don’t know how Jenica, the owner of Pumpkin Boutique does it.

I just grabbed a few pictures as samples of some of the many items to choose from in her store but the picture above should wet your appetite if you are at all in need of children’s accessories. Although Bows are her specialty, you will find other items of equal quality and at equally reasonable prices in Jenicas’ store. If you don’t see exactly what you are looking for, contact her, custom work is accepted also.

For those living in the colder parts of the country, that favorite warm and comfortable quilt has probably already come out of summer storage and is ready for use. For the rest of us who are sitting here in states like Arizona with 90 plus degree temperatures, we have to wait for the pleasure of cuddling up under ours.

It doesn’t make much difference where one lives, there seems to be a common thread of remembrance among many. That being remembered times of childhood when nothing gave a sense of warmth and security on a cold rainy or snowy winter night than that of wrapping up in a quilt made by loving hands by either our mother, grandmother or aunt.

One of our business is primarily focused in wood oriented products so when it comes to woodworking oriented products, I do know a little bit about the creation process and quality. As such, I am very pleased to review today’s store. Treecycle creations focus primarily on woodturning. For those that are unfamiliar with the term, it is a general term used by those who create items on a wood turning lathe. I might as well admit that turning is one of my favorite woodworking activities but I don’t get to do it anywhere as much as I would like to.

I believe it is important that in order for some one to have a real appreciation for turned items, they need to have some basic understanding of what is involved in the creation of turned items. Creating a turned piece is much more involved than just slapping a piece of wood on a lathe and going to it. The understanding of the turning process is of course a basic necessity but beyond that, the turner needs to have an understanding of the wood they are working with also. How it will react and respond to the turning process. Knowing which woods work best and also look good are also elements that have to be understood. There are a lot of other aspects, many of the intangible, that the turner must master also in order to create beautiful works.

Andy, the owner of Treecycle knows his craft. I give you this piece from his store announcement to underscore those intangible elements I was referring to earlier, “Although sometimes i have an idea of what i want to create, maybe halfway through, the grain pattern emerges and then this dictates which way to go, fantastic medium to work with!”. These skills only come about after many hours spent behind a lathe. Although almost anyone can learn the mechanics of wood turning, the ability to create beautiful pieces requires imagination, understanding and probably most of all a real appreciation of wood itself.

Working with wood, is working with something living. Each and every piece of wood has its own special characteristics and each piece has hidden within it a great piece of art. It just takes a talented artist and craftsman to let it come out.

Almost anyone can turn out a bowl on a lathe but it takes an artist to create pieces like the picture above shows. You will find many other just as creative pieces in Andy’s store also. Not just bowls either. The wide variety of products attest to the skilled hands behind the gouges, skews and other turning tools used to create them.

One of the really nice things about buying hand turned creations is that you can actually make two identical items and because of the fact that wood, even from the same tree and just a few feet apart, will have different characteristics. This fact alone almost assures that when you purchase a hand turned piece, you are buying a one-of-a-kind creations.

Well turned creations take time. Turning is not a fast process. It takes time to coax out the piece hidden in any piece of wood. Work too fast and you have junk. Cut too much off too fast and you can damage the wood. Add to this the fact that it can takes days or even weeks to prepare a piece of wood for turning if it is really old and has not been protected properly. If you haven’t noticed also, wood isn’t cheap these days. Good wood has never been cheap but some of it is becoming almost as expensive as fine jewelry and that is just in its raw state.

Because of this quality turned products are not inexpensive. However what you are buying is something that will last for generations if properly cared for. It’s well to consider the purchase of a quality turned item like purchasing a quality piece of furniture. As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for.

I don’t know who or when the soap was invented but I’m pretty sure that the majority of people would agree with me that I’m glad it was. At least I am today. That wasn’t my thinking when I was a small child however. At the time, I had some pretty good reasons for thinking this way. Primarily because when I was a young child living on the farm, one of my chores was to help mother and grandmother make their home made soap. Yes, and it was good old fashion lye soap. If you have never had the experience of having the smell of cooking hog lard and lye sweep through your nostrils, let me just say you haven’t missed a thing.

Now that soap really cleaned and if you didn’t rinse it off real well, it could feel like it could keep on cleaning until it hit bone. My parents and grandparents have long passed on and I miss them more as I have grown older myself but I can’t say I really miss that old lye soap.

For a not too distant period of our history here in America, the art of soap making in the average American home was starting to fade into history also. The toys given to children have certainly changed since I was a child or even our children when they were young. The amount of change is of course dependent on your age and possibly where you lived as a child. Although there have been a lot of changes, some types of toys always seem to make great gifts. I get to review a lot of different stores and each one is unique and special in their own right. When it comes to handmade clothing there are more than a few stores to shop from. Each one different and each one has pieces of clothing that in their own right are just the perfect piece for whoever purchases them. This makes reviewing clothing stores very interesting and somewhat of a problem in choosing a specific store to review. When I find myself in this situation, I fall back on some well learned lessons. First, when in doubt, go with your gut feeling and secondly, if my wife likes what she sees in a store, it has to be good. You can’t be married for over 40 years and not lean a few things. With that being said, I want to take you to what I consider a very special store, The Screaming Needle Designs.

I call The Screaming Needle Designs a special store because the products in it contain all three of what I consider essential elements that make up all great products and of course the store itself. Style, Imagination and Functionality. Although there are a few other items in the store, the vast majority of products found are women’s clothing so that’s my focus here.

Everything I could see in the shop appears to be very well designed with the concepts of imagination and style blending very well. There is also a wide selection of clothing types available from Casual T-Shirts to Dresses and most things in between. Everything seen in the store certainly has practical day to day functionality. Of course not wearing women’s clothing, I am only able to go by what items look like but the pieces shown in The Screaming Needles shop certainly look extremely comfortable which is an important factor for most shoppers. Like I mentioned earlier, there is also a very nice selection of other complimentary merchandise to choose from also.

One thing that really stands out is their ability to achieve that great look one is always looking for and do it without sacrificing your pocket book, this takes skill and imagination. As they state in their store announcement, “Almost everything in my shop is one of a kind (ooak) and upcycled or build from scratch (bfsc)”. In other words I don’t think any shopper is going to have to worry about seeing that piece they purchased on anyone else.

If The Screaming Needle Design had actual physical doors, I don’t believe I would wrong in saying that any shopper would probably walk out of its doors a little giddy with delight at the fact that they found a beautiful one of a kind creation at a fantastic price.
